Hornblende
(in
all likelihood ferrohornblende), with Fluorapatite, from
Gooderham,
Haliburton County, Ontario, Canada.
A Sm.CAB
display
specimen having large crystals of jet-black hornblende, with smaller
crystals
of fluorapatite. There is some earthy, brown iron oxide on the specimen
due to
weathering, and some traces of plant material from where this specimen
was dug.
Original
label indicates
it was collected in 1969. Label says "Gooderham", but specimen most
likely came from the Bear Lake Diggings between Gooderham and Tory
Hill, Ont.
Many specimens from this area are very badly corroded and permanently
oxidized,
but this one is in nice condition and retains quite a bit of luster.
Size is
just over 3
inches across maximum dimension.
