Glaucochroite & Willemite pendant in sterling silver wirewrap. Some tephroite is most likely present as well. Cabochon is free-form tapered. Size of stone is about 20 mm wide by about 44 mm high (measured top to lower left-hand corner). That's roughly 1 5/8 inch tall. Treatments: None. Origin: the rough material came from Franklin, New Jersey. Special Properties: 1.) The glaucochroite has the "alexandrite effect" (i.e., color change) - it appears to be a different color depending on whether you look at it in fluorescent white or incandescent white light. Incandescent light makes it appear lilac or purplish (as shown in the photo above), while fluorescent light makes it turn blue-gray. This color change effect is one way to distinguish glaucochroite from tephroite. Another clue is that the willemite appears within it more as spots, not as parallel lines associated with exsolution from tephroite. 2.) The willemite fluoresces brilliant green in short-wave ultra-violet light (this requires a special "mineral light" of 254 nanometers; a regular "black light" will not work):
This is a unique, connoisseur's piece you're not going to find in a store. The rough material for this pendant came from an old collection; the Franklin mine closed in 1954. We have a couple more cabochons from this rock, but the supply is limited and there will be no more after they're gone. Satisfaction Guaranteed or your money back!
