The U-tube accepts dry desiccant (e.g., calcium chloride lumps) and is then fitted with holed stoppers. The gas to be dried is passed through the tube.
Both sizes take #00 stopper. (Please note that holed #00 stoppers may need to be bored wider to accept 5 mm glass tubing; the pre-existing holes seem to be meant for 4 mm glass tube.)
