Cutting Glass Tubing

Large diameters (>8 mm):
We recommend using a water-cooled diamond saw.

Small diameters (<8 mm):
Use the traditional method of scoring with a file.

Wear safety goggles and leather gloves when cutting any type of glass tubing!
CR Scientific

Tubing, Glass, "soft" (soda-lime or crown glass) - 5, 6, 12, 14, and 20 mm tube diameters available. This glass is less expensive than equivalent-diameter borosilicate glass and is easier to work in a flame, but it is not as resistant to heat shock or corrosion.  Crown glass will shatter when exposed to rapid temperature changes.

The manufacturer calls it "Flint Glass" but does not provide any details. It seems to be more soda-lime in composition than flint (i.e., lead glass).  Specifications on a batch of this glass have been measured and are shown here courtesy of Kigre, Inc.:

Index of refraction:  1.5092
Transition temperature: 549°C
Deformation temperature:  570°C
Coefficient of thermal expansion (20 to 100°C)  = 88.4 x 10e-7/°C.
Coefficient of thermal expansion (20 to 300°C) = 95.03 x 10e-7/°C.

Please note that the amount of variation between batches is unknown;  the data above are given only as a rough guide.  The glass tubing is made overseas and is not labeled with the specifications.  The data provided above are from a recent batch and may or may not be representative of the glass in general.

Tubing larger than 6 mm O.D. is sold in bundles of 3 pieces each.

Important Shipping Note:  Small items, such as tubing cutters, stoppers, etc, generally ship in the same box with the glass tubing.  However, large items such as filter flasks have to ship in a separate box.  This can incur additional shipping charges that are not listed in your shopping cart.
Example:  Suppose you order a 1000-mL filter flask and a dozen pcs glass tubing.  This order will have to ship in two boxes.  Your shipping cost will be roughly $7 more than what is listed in your shopping cart.
