While many "toy" microscopes use plastic optics, the Outfitter is of sturdy, metal construction and comes with real glass optics. The Outfitter magnifies up to 400x and can be used to view a variety of biological specimens: protozoans, insect parts, molds & fungi, plants, many plant & animal cells, and even some of the larger bacteria. Regrettably, the Outfitter has been discontinuted by LW Scientific; however, we still have a few of them in stock. As a backpacker's microscope this great little unit remains our favorite. We now have the MOBI Jr. available as our premier beginner scope.
Outfitter Microscope set................$67 Manuf. suggested retail is $99. 3 March 2008: We have a few of these left. Ideal for the beginner or backpacker who wants to study nature a little more closely. Explore remote waterways and mountain paths... and bring your microscope along! Who knows what interesting things you can observe. The prism mounted beneath the Outfitter's stage allows you to use sunlight! For indoor use, we suggest an LED flashlight with multiple, white LED's to illuminate the Outfitter, especially for junior microscopists. These flashlights have become fairly inexpensive ($7-$15) and provide cool light. Adults who want to enjoy the Outfitter microscope may wish to use an inexpensive, department-store desk lamp. Although these lamps do emit considerable heat, we've had success with them.
