| Q: What are Achromatic, PLAN, and Semi-PLAN? A: Achromatic is a standard lens type designed to reduce or eliminate chromatic (color) aberration. Semi-PLAN and PLAN optics are improvements over the basic type. They "flatten" the field of view (i.e., more of the subject appears in the plane of focus). Full PLAN optics are the most expensive but allow the greatest "flattening" of the image. Q: What is Koehler Illumination and why would I need it? A: The image quality of a microscope depends not only on its lenses but also on the focus and evenness of the light source. Koehler illumination adds another diaphragm to the light path, allowing for finer adjustment, elimination of stray light, and more uniform illumination. If your budget can cover the extra $85 or so, the Koehler upgrade kit (#R3-KHL) is worth it. |

The Eye Tube configuration (shown in photo) allows your trinocular port to accept a Mini-VID or, with the proper adapters (sold separately), a digital camera such as a Canon Powershot.

Phase Contrast Kit (10x, 40x, and 100x)
Phase contrast is not the same as darkfield. Phase contrast uses special lighting and optics that enhance the appearance of cell boundaries and other features (e.g., flagella) that can be difficult to see otherwise. Like darkfield, phase contrast does not require staining and can be used to view live cells. Good for live protozoans, blood cells, dinoflagellates, etc.
